There are several major electric guitar pickup types, however, and each has their own unique characteristics. The single coil pickup The first pickup design was a single-coil pickup. The pickup itself was you guessed it a single coil of wire, with 2 horseshoe shaped magnets. Arguably, the brand that made the single coil pickup its own was Fender. The characteristic tone of a single-coil pickup is bright and cutting. The drawback of typical single-coil pickups is that they tend to be quite noisy, with mains hum a contributor to this. Other single coils tend to be somewhere between these two examples, depending on the width of the coil, as this greatly affects how bright or dark the tone will be. Which brings us onto the next pickup type… P90 Pickups Gibson has contributed a huge amount to the development of the electric guitar pickup over the years. The P90 was introduced after the Second World War, and replaced its previous bar or blade design pickups.

Les Paul and SG. I really like P90 pickups, so I decide to make something especially for them. My wiring design has got a few extra options. You will need also some additional wires. If you will not use the push-pull switches, the wiring will be working almost like a typical, original Jr wiring. There is the 0, uF tone cap. It can cut off more treble than a standard one 0, uF. It can also make your sound a little bit dull – if you will turn the pot all the way down.

Use this guide to pinpoint the Les Paul that matches up with your music, your style, and your budget. First Came The Clunker Les Paul had struggled for years with the feedback generated by electric hollowbody guitars when their volume was cranked up. In the early s he bought an Epiphone Broadway hollowbody and retrofitted it with his own hand-wound pickups and a rectangular steel bar body brace.
Paul attached two wooden wings on either side of the slab giving The Log roughly the appearance of a conventional archtop guitar. And Finally, the Les Paul was Born It took several years and the introduction of a highly successful solidbody electric guitar by a certain California guitar company to bring Gibson around.
Jun 19, · A 55 P90 should have a black grommet – though a few 50s P90s reportedly had the tan grommet, which is found mostly on early ’60s guitars. Most old P90s will still have the light brown paper wrapper shown in Mike20s picture.
Last year the original owner sold it, and one of my customers picked it up for a steal. It went cheap because the guitar wasn’t making any noise when plugged in. The buyer did a little troubleshooting, and figured out that the problem had to be within the dirty old pickup itself — an original P with vintage value. He sent me these photos before disconnecting the pickup, boxing it up and shipping it to me for repair.
He unsoldered the pickup lead at the volume pot X on this drawing. I wish he hadn’t chosen that spot. A better place to disconnect is where the pickup lead wires connect to the other end of that lead.

I say do a little more research on this subject to make your decision tone Thanks for the reply! Yes, I agree that the guitar is pricey, and yes, I agree that a guitar is a guitar and if one feels right then that’s all you usually need well, that and the cash to buy it. The playability I’m fine with, I don’t know much about the tone though. There are two small clips on the Gibson website but you can’t figure out much from them. I’d be more than happy to buy a cheaper LP Nasville Jr but not a regular LP Jr, as it’s finished with polyurethane and IMHO that tends to kill the vibe of the body wood , but that one is a 3-piece body of probably lower quality mahogany , the tuners I understand are pretty bad too, and the finish is reportedly bad not because it’s “satin” but because people have received them with “ink spots” on the neck and so on.
So a more expensive one simply seems a more prudent choice – Gibson says the BJA has got a 1-piece mahogany body, the finish is nitrocellulose lacquer, and it’s basically a reissue minus the thickness of the neck and the pickup – and the pickup can be changed, to get back to I’m not what you’d call a Billie Joe Armstrong or Green Day fan really, but you have to give credit where credit’s due.
So I’m not looking at it as a more expensive regular LP Jr, but as a much cheaper vintage reissue. I’d get a cheaper one if I could test 15 of them in a local store and go home with the winner. But not being able to even test one as luck might have it, I’m reluctant to pay less and settle for something that won’t really do. As for the simplicity of it, that’s actually what I’m after.
I’m a “set-your-pickup-switch-once-and-forget-about-it” kind of guy, so if there’s only one pickup and it’s where it’s supposed to be, all the rest are overkill.

The West Picked up a Korean made Casino over the weekend. It appears to have never been touched, in mint condition. Neck was dead straight, maybe even a little back-bowed with stupid high action, but sounded incredible so I pulled the trigger.
Another resource for IDing and dating guitars is Gibson’s computer database, which catalogues scores of serial numbers from on through the present. “It doesn’t always date the guitar,” says Davidson.
June 02, , Like I said, I ended up using a k volume on the bridge to take off some edge, and k on the neck. My next set will be the nasty 90 bridge and the low wind neck. I think the neck could use some un-muddying in the lows like most neck P90s, and the bridge could use a little bump. That isn’t unique to the Kinmans though, all vintage P90s strike me that way. I’ve tried about everything he makes at some time.
My feeling at this point RE the strat pickups is that, in spite of his over-the-top marketing and general arrogance, the Area line equal or trump them, are less expensive, and come without the unbearable condescension. His ‘unaged’ models are very similar in feel to the Areas, but to my ear and fingers the Areas tend to be a bit more fun to play. They take overdrive better and are just as nice clean. For a while they were my go-to noiseless before the Areas.
I’ll probably get a set of the unaged versions though so I can offer an informed opinion.

There are a lot of excellent options on the market, but when it comes to upgrading the pickups on a specific model—in this case, a Les Paul—there are a few specific things you should keep in mind. First, you want to make sure that the pickup will fit easily onto your guitar without modification. Les Pauls use a humbucker-sized pickup, ruling out most single-coil and P designs. Vintage humbuckers from Wolfetone will make your Les Paul sound better than any other pickup on the market.
On overdrive, these pickups see full specs rock hard, giving you crunchy chords and powerful lead lines.

I liked its design—it had great playability and was comfortable. It was a Stratocaster copy with three single coil pickups. One thing I didn’t like was the sound that came from the bridge pickup. It was too thin, and at that time I needed a pretty thick sound. So it sounded fat when played through Tube Screamer and Marshall amps. A few months later I replaced it with a single coil stack Humbucker and was happy with the results.

First PAF pickups came about in on Gibson steel guitar models, and on on many Gibson spanish guitar models, and lasted to about to Nickel plated part models transitioned away from PAF pickups first around , since these guitars were sold in greater numbers.
PAF pickups of course have two internal coil bobbins under a 1. I guess we should start with a little history of the Gibson PAF pickup. By the mid s, Gibson wanted to counter the latest electric guitars introduced by Fender. Leo Fender had built a company that was a sizable competitor in the solid-body guitar market place. Gibson believed they could beat Fender with their high quality Les Paul, and by developing a low-noise pickup.
The problem with Gibson’s P and Fender’s single-coil pickups was inherent in their designs, allowing cycle hum noise to interfer with the sound. Seth Lover was the Gibson engineer assigned to solve the problem. Seth connected two single coil pickups in series opposed to parallel and connected the coils out-of-phase electrically and magnetically. Thus the signal noise of each separate coil canceled out the noise of the other coil.

He used it initially with The Starlite Wranglers and then primarily on tour and all but the last Sun recordings with Elvis. He traded it in on July 7, at Houck’s for a Gibson L5. Years ago I showed Scotty the guitar and he verified that it was in fact the guitar he traded at a Memphis music store for a new guitar he was purchasing. The guitar as when I had it was featured in the book by Lee Cotten titled: Roy Gibson produced the s from until 59 58 last production version but several made in 59 for a Summer show , reintroduced them in but has since discontinued them again..
They were essentially a fancified ES with Gold Bronze metallic finish and floral pickguard. Roy Scotty used to use a “Bobby Lee” style guitar strap with his guitars in the ’50s. He would attach it with the bottom strap button and loop the other end around the headstock, as was customary with many players at the time. The strap with the guitar now appears to be the one Scotty had originally, as near as he can tell. He had this and a Kluson made tailpiece as used on ES s and other guitars of that era put on his early on to facilitate more accurate intonation of the guitar.
