Top of page Continued from the top. More recently, Princess Diana’s ring once again made history when her son, William, presented it to his fiancee, Kate Middleton, upon their engagement in October As they’ve done for centuries, royals often set trends, and these famous pieces of jewelry open up numerous possibilities for contemporary brides who favor vintage or antique sapphire engagement rings. Sapphire History and Legend The word sapphire derives from two words: In the Middle Ages, clergy wore sapphires to symbolize heaven. The stones have many other virtues attributed to them–romance, peace, wisdom, chastity–all of which make them both a powerful and beautiful choice for an engagement ring. The Biblical Connection If your faith is an important part of your wedding vows, then an antique sapphire engagement ring lends a bit of a Christian touch to your ceremony.

The Thai blue star sapphire is a variety of sapphire that displays a six-pointed star pattern, radiating from the inky depths of the stone. Sapphire, along with her sister gemstone ruby, belongs to the corundum group of gemstones, considered one of the hardest minerals on Earth. The name sapphire is from the Latin “sapphirus” meaning blue. There are different types of sapphire available in the market and most of them have unique qualities pursued by many.
A select few sapphires have the ability to display a star-like spectacle referred as asterism. This star can appear in any color but typically occurs in blue, black and pink gemstones. Thai blue star sapphire also exhibits pleochroism, meaning it appears different colors when viewed from different angles. The opaque Thai blue star sapphire is carved with a rounded cabochon cut to accentuate its shining asterism properties. The word asterism comes from the Greek word “aster” meaning star.
Needle-shaped microscopic inclusions within the gem naturally align to reflect a six-pointed star. The blazing effects of asterism are strongest on the face of the gem when observed in daytime. Only about three out of every raw sapphires exhibit the star-effect. Of those three gems, only one will meet the standards to be called top quality. Since it is so rare to find this gemstone in its natural occurring form, our blue star sapphires undergo a diffusion treatment to enhance the asterism effect.

A New Birthstone for August Many authors link the tradition of associating a birthstone with each month of the year to Aaron’s breastplate of the Bible’s Book of Exodus. Others link it to customs from 16th century Germany and 18th century Poland . In , the National Association of Jewelers, now the Jewelers of America, adopted and began promoting a modern list of birthstones. Spinel was not used as a birthstone in this list.
Before then, peridot served as the August birthstone. Now both spinel and peridot will share the designation. This event and continued promotion of monthly birthstones will bring significant attention to spinel, which occurs in a variety of colors. Consumers will now have a choice beyond the yellow-green color of peridot.
The best way to learn about minerals is to study with a collection of small specimens that you can handle, examine, and observe their properties. Inexpensive mineral collections are available in the Geology. However, in the s synthetic spinels in a wide variety of colors were produced to imitate popular gemstones such as aquamarine , zircon , tourmaline , emerald , chrysoberyl , and ruby.
The colors were produced by introducing metals in trace amounts into the stone by the addition of:

The Royal Family The Queen will notch up yet another remarkable milestone in her record-breaking reign next week – but for her, it will be a day of contemplation rather than celebration. On Feb 6, the Queen will become the first British monarch to reach a Blue Sapphire Jubilee, 65 years to the day since she ascended the throne. The Queen waves to crowds in Windsor during her 90th birthday celebrations last April Credit: Her father King George VI will be very much in her thoughts as she spends the rest of the day behind closed doors.
Five years ago, the Queen became only the second monarch in history, after Victoria , to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee and, in , she surpassed her as our longest-reigning monarch. Although she is the first British monarch to reach 65 years on the throne, the feat is not unique elsewhere.
One of my all time favorites. I have a friend who is a dead ringer for Sapphire, even her big hanging tits. I have wanted to fuck her for years, so if you are out there Karen lets fuck.
E… At the event, the year-old artist gave a speech filled with emotion about her struggles with PTSD from sexual assault trauma and fibromyalgia. With public appearances at the Grammys, the Venice Film Festival, and others, no one thought to question the unique and stunning ring that graced her left hand as being an engagement ring. The pink sapphire center stone is estimated to be between carats.
The stone is an oval cut, a shape that helps to elongate the finger. The pink sapphire is set in a halo of diamonds estimated to be an additional carats. It is quite rare to find pink sapphires in such a large carat size with vibrant color and clarity. The beautiful ring is reminiscent of other recent stunning engagement rings worn by Kate Middleton and Princess Eugenie.
These other royal sapphire engagement rings have an illustrious history with Kate Middleton sporting the carat blue sapphire engagement ring originally chosen by Princess Diana upon her engagement to Prince Charles. Princess Eugenie sparked another wave in sapphire appeal with the reveal of her padparadscha sapphire engagement ring, one of the rarest gemstones in the world, styled after the ruby engagement ring worn by her mother, Sarah Ferguson.
A design that is at once traditional and modern in its sentimentality and simplicity, the center stone surrounded by a diamond halo has come to be called a Marguerite design, loosely inspired by the look of a daisy. The pink color is also notable as Lady Gaga has a pattern of choosing overtly romantic symbols of love: Lady Gaga and Christian Carino were confirmed to be dating in February of ahead of her groundbreaking Super Bowl halftime performance.
While they have made their relationship public, they have stayed a low-key couple.

Anniversary 5th and 45th Green sapphire’s mellow and relaxing colors are just one reason for this gemstone’s popularity. As with all sapphire, it’s also extremely durable, having a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale. Sapphire has a specific gravity of 4. The refractive index RI , measured using a refractometer, is an indication of the amount light rays are bent by a mineral. Birefringence is the difference between the minimum and maximum RI.
When birefringence is high, light rays reflect off different parts of the back of a stone causing an apparent doubling of the back facets when viewed through the front facet.

The most common understanding is that the first five commandments were written on one tablet, and the other five commandments were on the second. As such, the words were clearly legible on one side and written in mirror writing on the other. The centers of these letters, Rav Chisda concludes, must have been miraculously suspended in place. Others teach that the writing was miraculously legible on each side—in other words, although the letters were engraved all the way through, they could nevertheless be read from right to left on both sides.
Rabbeinu Bechayei explains that this is because the Torah can be understood on two levels, one revealed and one hidden. What Did the Tablets Look Like? It is not known what alphabet was employed in the writing on the tablets but other things have been found from that era and it is in what is called today, Paleo or ancient Hebrew so the mem and samech would not have looked the same as the more modern block letters.
You can see the early and middle letters of both the Mem and the Samach are nothing like the Late Hebrew, so I would have to doubt that. It seems that Rav Chisda, who lived in the second century didn’t take that into account.

Zircon mining in the RVP is all on a small-scale arti- sanal level. Buckets of zircon-bearing dirt are hand- winched to surface where workers sift through the soil to extract the megacrysts. The alluvial wash contains xenocrysts of zircon, corundum blue, blue-green, orange-brown, yel- low and spinel, along with fragments of the xenocryst- bearing alkaline basalt, felsic volcanic rocks and other country rock.
The water-table at Bo Loei is higher than that at other Ban Lung zircon deposits, allowing for panning and concen- tration of the zircon ore in the river nearby. Megacrystic zircons are found concentrated in situ in alluvial deposits formed by extensive weathering of the underlying Cenozoic basalts. Small amounts of metalic elements can substitute for aluminum in the sapphire crystal structure, giving rise to many color variations. Gem sapphire of any color is refered to as sapphire with a preceeding color designation if the color is any other than blue. Blue sapphire is simply called sapphire. There are two other color varieties of corundum that have specific names, the pinkish-red to red ruby and the orangish-pink padparadscha.
Other color influencing impurities in sapphires are vanadium, cobalt and nickel. Some sapphires owe their color to ‘color centers’ which are not fully understood, but it can be said that they are created by radiation and destroyed reversed by heating or in some cases by exposure to light. Some color centers in sapphire are stable until heated hundreds of degrees while others are very unstable, fading within a few days merely by exposure to light.
The color and in some cases the clarity in gem sapphire can be modified by a number of processes that are in common use today. Most of these processes involve heating, often in the presence of specific chemical ingredients, in order to intensify a natural color or sometimes to introduce an entirely different color altogether. Many light gray to pale blue gem corundums with a ‘silky’ look due to microscopic titanium oxide inclusions are heated to near their melting point, resulting in the dissolution of the silk-causing inclusions producing a more transparent gem.
This improvement in clarity is often accompanied by a much stronger deep blue color as well. Gem sapphire that exhibits natural color and clarity commands a significant price premium over comparable artificially enhanced sapphire of natural origin. Determining whether a natural gem sapphire has been artificially enhanced can be very difficult and is quite often impossible with the naked eye alone.
